Continue reading "Pericles Funeral Oration" up to p. 148 (bottom of page, section 42 line 10).
One of the Athenian values was courage. The soldier that they’re talking about had courage because in one of the sentences they said that he “nobly fought and he nobly died”. This can be good for the trail of Socrates because Socrates died with courage as well, he died for what he believed.

DUE FRIDAY 5/18 Apology Reading pp. 61-70
[[I have a more sincere belief, gentlemen, than any of my accusers; and I leave it to you and God to judge me in whatever way shall be best for me for yourselves.]]
I liked this sentence because God is the only one that can judge a person. In this sentence it shows that Socrates is a very brave man and that he has a lot of courage.

DUE THR 5/17 The Apology pp. 51-61
[[It would be ridiculous as to believe in the young of horses or donkeys and not horses and donkeys themselves.]]
This sentence was really interesting because it’s true; how can you not believe in something but believe in the youth of it. This sentence was really confusing but I was very interesting as well.

DUE WED 5/16 The Apology
[[I make this distinction because I have already been accused in your hearing by a great many people for a great many years, though without a word of truth; and I am more afraid of those people than I am of Anythus and his colleagues.]]
I chose this sentence because it was really interesting. In this sentence Socrates is saying that he has already been accuse for something and he’s more afraid of the people that put hi in that situation than Anythus. If I was Socrates I would’ve felt the same way; I would’ve been more mad at those people than Anythus.

Imus question #3....
Do you think Imus should be silenced???
INTRO: During the discussion today we discussed if Imus should be silenced or not. From my perspective I think that he shouldn’t be silence because he is not the only one that has said racial and sexist things. Other comedians have said things like that and even worst. Yes, he did say something offensive but he apologize afterwards.
1:Comedians such as Carlos Mencia, Jorge Lopez, and Dave Chappell also mention racism and sexist in their shows. But are they silencing them? No. Because that’s what they do which is to make jokes. If comedians aren’t being silence then why should Imus be.
2:Again with the comedians. Some of these comedians mention a lot of racisms and sexist but they have also said some worst things. Things that will hurt people even more.
3:Even if Imus did say something bad and offensive he still manage to apologize to the basketball team. And yes, they did accept the apology. So if they weren’t making it a big deal why should other people make it?
CON:In conclusion I think that Imus shouldn’t be silence. Like I had said there a lot of other people that have said many worst things and people everyday make fun of their own race . So why make it a big deal and just let him keep his show.
Imus Posting
1. According to the NAACP, why should Imus be silenced?
The NAACP wants Imus to be silence because of the racial and sexist things that he mentions on his radio show. They thought that it was inappropriate for imus to have said all these things.
2. According to Frank Rich, why should Imus not be silenced?
Frank Rich thinks that Imus shouldn’t be silence because other celebrities have said racial things. So why do they have to silence him? He’s not the only one that has said something like that.

DUE WED 3/28 Plato Assignment
1. Short Paragraph – Personal Reflection: Before reading the selection from Plato write at least one full paragraph on this question: Why do you think Plato (or anyone else) would want to censor Homer (yesterday the question was about Hesiod)? You might want to think about Achilles as a "hero," and why or why not his personal characteristics are something that should be promoted, or not.
a: I think that Homer‘s way of thinking is kind of violent and it might even be inappropriate.
3a. According to Plato, what are some aspects of poetry that should be banned and why? In other words, how can poetry undermine the education of a Guardian?
a: The characters act in a very disrespectful way and I think that the violence with eating children is just very obnoxious.
3b. What should poetry “teach” and why?
a: I think that poetry should be teaching the man is not perfect and it should also be teaching good morals.
4. If you were talking to Plato what would you say to him? Do you agree with his ideas? Do you think poetry, or literature in general, should be put to the purposes that he says it should?
a: I would not agree wit him because poetry suppose to be for something good and he is just saying the opposite of what its suppose to be.
